The Strange Tones

By The Strange Tones, 2008-03-08

“If surf guitar god Dick Dale found himself in Bogie’s Maltese Falcon film-noir underworld, and drank beer at the seedy bar with bluesmen Jimmy Reed and Magic Sam, the resulting soundtrack might be exactly what the Strange Tones purvey.” - Oregonian
Just in the nick of time, one of the Northwest’s most notorious live bands has answered the call with their new release “We’re On Our Way”. The Strange Tones have emerged from their undisclosed secure location with their most entertaining collection of songs yet. 11 originals and a bonus tribute track to the late, great Paul deLay fill out this CD, which also features the legendary Curtis Salgado (harp & vocals), Jim Wallace (harp), and Mike Walker (Hammond Organ).

Rather than plundering the shrines of American music and merely imitating their heroes, these sonic crime fighters have concocted their own secret formula, a one of a one-of-a-kind style they call “Crime-A-Billy”. The band draws upon the rich traditions of blues, rockabilly, surf, and R & B, and combines these ingredients with fresh, well-crafted song writing and dynamic performances. “This band has a clear handle on who they are, setting them well apart from pedestrian shuffle bands and three-chord posers.” -Oregonian

The magic of this ensemble is fueled by four players who are equally compelled and driven to advance their cause. This fearsome foursome, led by the husband-and-wife team of Guitar Julie and bassist Andy Strange, and fortified by longtime partners guitarist Suburban Slim and drummer J.D. Huge, form “....one of Portland’s most original and accomplished bands.” - Oregonian. It may be Andy’s lessons learned as bassman for legendary wildman and voodoo practitioner Screamin‘ Jay Hawkins, or Guitar Julie’s steady childhood diet of Jimmy Reed and Ike and Tina Turner. It could be J.D.‘s deep groove from his years as a studio musician and live performer, or Slim’s intensity and creativity that consistently earn him awards. As anyone who sees The Strange Tones perform live knows, it’s much more than these four individuals....this is a BAND.

The Strange Tones’ fiery, unique sound and outstanding musicianship has earned the band multiple awards as “Best Contemporary Band” and “Best Electric Guitar” by the Cascade Blues Association. Their previous CD “Crime-A-Billy” received much acclaim, including reaching the Top 20 Chart in Spain for FM Blues Radio, and their song “Pinto Squire” was featured on National Public Radio’s Car Talk. The Strange Tones step up to the plate with their new release. Their continued development as a dynamic band with relentless energy and exciting live shows are well captured on “We’re On our Way”.

Finally...songs with lyrics

By Third Octave, 2008-03-07

It has been a few months...but we finally are able to post some of our songs with lyrics. These were recorded at one of our shows a few months ago. The audio was captured from a video recorder...not the greatest, but it has the rawness and imperfections alot of us still pine for in this digital recording age. Enjoy! Third Octave

The Ven-U Vagabonds

By Shadows865, 2008-03-04

Hey everyone just wanted to say a few things about our show this past Saturday March 1st at the Ven-U. IT KICKED A$$!!!! That's all...

All seriousness aside (ha ha ha) we had a helluva time. Wanna thank the Ven-U first and foremost for having us. It's a great place to do a show and we really hope to be back there in the very near future. The sound was flawless and the lights were great. Rod, you did a fantastic job with the lights and organizing the whole thing. The pressure mounted and I'm sure and you hit it out of the park my friend!!! Thanks again to Reign Man for being there as well. That was the second time we've had the privilege of jammin with you guys and it's really appreciated.

As you may know, and if you don't here it is, we were to open for Bon Voyage. Chris the guitar player is pretty sick and, I hear as of today Monday he's doing much better, he still couldn't make the show. Needless to say, a few people were in a pinch and Electric Eye is glad as hell and honored to say we came through and helped out those of you who were in that pinch. Reign Man came through big time as well!!! . We're glad we were part of that show and certainly want to wish Chris with Bon Voyage a speedy recovery. We are like many fans I'm sure, looking forward to seeing Bon Voyage very soon.

Mike, what can we say man that was just a terrific experience for Electric Eye to have you up there doing those 3 AC/DC tunes with us. We know it's not the same but it did sound cool as hell and want to thank you BIG TIME for coming up there and jammin with us.

The show was great, the sound kicked, we had a blast and thanks to all the fans that came out. We hope we gave you all what you wanted. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our next show on March 22nd at Bada Brew.

Thanks each and every one of you for supporting us. We won't forget it

Dave - Electric Eye

Rebecca's Story

By rebeccaowen, 2008-03-03

What’s striking about Rebecca Owen’s voice is more than just her three-octave range; it’s the emotional intimacy of her singing. Owen gets inside the songs she sings, making them breathe and come to life in new ways that are immediately affecting. On her self-titled debut album, Rebecca Owen, the Albuquerque, New Mexico resident reveals herself to be both a striking interpreter of songs both new and familiar and a significant new talent on the rise. A native of Slidell, Louisiana, music has always been a part of Rebecca’s life. Her parents have both been heavily involved in music, and Rebecca began playing piano as a young girl. Reba McEntire was the driving force in inspiring Rebecca to sing, and as she recalls, “One day mom and I were listening to Reba in the car and I was singing along real loud, and she looked at me and asked, ‘Where did you learn do that?’ It was the first time I realized I might have something special.” Rebecca was soon singing in her school and church and had her first public performance at the age of eleven. As Rebecca recalls, she never had any doubts about her path. “By thirteen, I knew that music was what I wanted to do forever. I sang everywhere I could – festivals, fairs, school and church. I even used to call the country stations in town and ask them if I could sing over the radio. Then at fifteen, I started singing on demo recordings for songwriters who were looking to sell their songs.” During college, Rebecca moved to Nashville for a bit and even worked for a live music show based in New Orleans. But since moving to Albuquerque, she’s taken her music to the next level. People really have taken notice a lot more here and they’re great about supporting new artists. In Albuquerque, it’s less about what “the new thing” is than it is about people really just enjoying themselves; there’s an appreciation of music here that’s much more pure than any other place I’ve been.” And Rebecca’s reputation as a live performer has grown here, a singer who connects with any audience. “I’m committed to putting on a wildly entertaining show,” she states. “I bring a lot of energy and I’m out to connect to every single person in the audience. And I choose the songs I sing because they have great stories that everyday people can connect to.” The songs she sings and the stories she tells are present on her new album, Rebecca Owen. Produced by Johnny Mulhair, a New Mexico native who produced Leann Rimes’ first two albums and was nominated for a CMA award, the album is a beguiling mix of songs both legendary and unknown. There is the homage to traditional country, in her version of Hank Williams Sr.’s “My Heart Would Know,” and the challenge of singing a song written by one of her favorite artists, Lucinda Williams “I Lost It.” But the heart of the album is in the original songs like “Sidewinder,” written by her friend Kris Russell. “When I first heard that song,” Rebecca remembers, “I knew it could rock. It’s the ultimate bad boyfriend song.” Rebecca sings the song with the sexiness of a woman whose desire overwhelms her caution. “World Without You,” is a showcase for the full range of Rebecca’s voice, building through the song to a thrilling series of climaxes. After opening for artists such as Little Big Town, Rick Trevino, Lorrie Morgan and Jack Ingram, Rebecca’s appetite for big shows has been activated. She says, “I’m trying to get bigger and better. When I open for these artists, I’m so spurred on by the excitement in the room; I want to be where they are.” With a growing audience, and a thrilling debut album, it is only a matter of time where Rebecca Owen, with her astonishing voice and electric stage presence, gets to be where she wants to be, singing the songs and stories that listeners hear their own lives in, establishing herself as a major new talent in the process.
